Out of the locus of L.A.’s Soul/Garage/Mod underground springs
Sidewalk Society, a trio whose unique style and sound pay homage to the groundbreaking music that emerged from the ’60s Sunset Strip and Swinging London scenes, while maintaining a quality entirely modern and relevant. Drawing inspiration from groups like the Kinks, the Move, T.Rex and Small Faces, Sidewalk Society has harnessed a groove that rides alongside contemporary rock ’n’ roll acts ranging from The Blue Van and Supergrass to Last Shadow Puppets.
The band was founded by childhood friends Dan Lawrence (guitar, vocals) and Dan West (bass, vocals)—sometimes referred to as “The Dans”—after bonding in the seventh grade over a mutual love for The Who SELL OUT album. The recent addition of the fantastic Jerry Buszek (The Shakes and The Sexies) on drums has provided an additional boost to this power trio’s diverse sound. “Our music owes as much to bebop as it does to what groups like The Who were doing in the sixties and seventies,” says Lawrence. “The songs are essentially simple and pop oriented, but when we play them live, we open them up to new possibilities, allowing their sound to remain fresh and new each time,” West adds. “Keeping the instrumentation lean and mean in the live situation makes it easier to do that, and makes it fun as hell!”
Recent live shows at clubs in and around L.A. have garnered Sidewalk Society countless accolades from the scene’s cognoscenti, who have filled The Echo, Spaceland, The Airliner and Alex’s Bar to witness the trio’s consistently dynamic and unbridled performances.
