i like Adrianne Lenker but i'd agree she is not on the level of the Koz. but i only say that because the Koz is way more prolific and has stood the test of time across Red House Painters, SKM, and his solo/side projects. the dude has dropped more 10/10s in a span of 5 years than Lenker has in her whole career. i think he's better than Elliot Smith fwiw.

yeah mark has made a lot of great projects like benji and ghosts of the highway but I mean in songwriting aspect wise that they’re equal, when it comes to albums, meaning not just songwriting but instrumental wise, vocal wise, and variety wise, mark is better, but as a songwriter they’re equals in my eyes, and same applies with Elliot! But that’s just my opinion

The problem with a shoutbox like this is that it attracts the same kind of pointless "virtue signaling" (sorry to use that ugly phrase, but it's the best term lol) as Morrissey. Yeah we get it, you think Mark is a bad guy, welcome to the club, get in line, join the rest of us, etc. We all know it already, and doing the cheeky little "Oh good music but this guys so lame!" kinda thing doesn't actually absolve you of the reasonable guilt you might feel while listening. If you believe that a musician like Mark is a traditionally "bad" person (signs point to yes), then either own up to the fact that you're doing something "bad" yourself by providing a modicum of financial support to him, or admit that you don't actually care all that much. I probably fall more in line with the latter, and if you listen to enough Sun Kil Moon to feel like you need to justify it by telling everyone how much you personally dislike him, you probably do too. Just stop being annoying about it

The only two worthwhile things to comment about Mark Kozelek is to either call him a hellspawn evil rapist, or a blessed secret-angel who was framed. I'm not interested in anything in between. Or just don't talk about him as an individual at all!

Well, if anything good can come of this situation, at least it's encouraged Mark to pick up his guitar again... Seems like he's currently retreating to the more tradition stylings of his SKM records before the shitstorm. Kinda predictable in the face of adversity, but not complaining either.

I still kinda respect his post-Benji explorations, although they could be very hit/miss for me, and obviously very rambling and hard to listen to sometimes, I think they're generally interesting experiments in songwriting. The Jesu collabs in particular I thought were amazing, especially their second record (which has recently been pulled from streaming for some reason. First album is still up though.)

Mark's music was a gentle breeze through my rough days in the 10's. "Admiral Fell Promises" and "April" can be great companions for rainy days. It's really unfortunate that a man with such a creative sensibility could actually be such an asshole. It is right to separate the art from the artist, but in light of the possible facts, the intimacy of his music and the closeness he creates with the listener when describing things makes the experience somewhat dubious. I can only say about my own experience, but it's really a pitty. By the way, what happened to this story in the end? Has there been any legal progress?

i feel ya. Mark's music was transformative for me in college. the man has captured so many moments of perfection since his days in RHP. Down Colorful Hill, Rollercoaster, Old Ramon, Highways, Perils, etc. even his stuff with Jesu is great. I don't think it's a "right/wrong" dichotomy though on whether to separate art from artist. I think it's more of a "can/cannot" ability. I certainly am able to and I am glad I am able to -- fuck most art I consume, I know absolutely nothing of the artist! I don't know how many times I've been touched by a book/film/poem only to find out the artist was racist or something. in the end, you're never gonna actually meet these people and they have near-zero bearing on your life. you can have a relationship with their work and not them.
