The song won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. It was the band's first Top 40 US hit, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also named the 91st best hard rock song of all time by VH1.

The band was formed in 1988 by Billy Corgan and James Iha, with bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin joining shortly after.
