Description
Goldfrapp
While always having enjoyed Goldfrapp’s music and appreciated her vocal talents, it wasn’t until Tales Of Us got it’s exquisite claws into me that I felt an uncontrollable urge to see them live. I just had to hear these songs in the flesh. I was not disappointed. The fragility of every track on the album made it almost inevitable that the majority of the songs from it would have to be played early in the set. The mood created is so unique that it would not sit comfortably with any other material. So the first six songs were all from the album without interruption. They created a magical atmosphere that brought me close to tears. I just sat there transfixed. The crowd was full of people equally transfixed. When she moved on to other material I was already in thrall to their beauty. Having missed out on the middle of Goldfrapp’s recorded career I was unfamiliar with Yellow Halo or Little Bird, the songs that gently steered the set in a more up tempo direction, and into the more familiar territory of Number 1, Ride A White Horse and Train which finished a sedate but wonderfully crafted set.
The encore was as near perfect as I could have asked for. The trio of Utopia, Clowns and Lovely Head were blissful and Strict Machine gave us a little shot of adrenalin to finish the night. I’m told an NME reviewer described Tales Of Us as samey and self-indulgent. I feel sorry for them if they are that blind to purity and beauty. The only thing I could have wished for was the remaining three tracks from Tales Of Us to have been played to make a magical night even more memorable.
