The opening track of Metronomy's debut album "Pip Paine (Pay The £5000 You Owe)" was written by frontman Joe Mount to impress a girl. He explained to NME: "I think in my head I was writing something like 'Blitzkrieg Bop' - the girl I was trying to impress was into The Ramones, you see. It caught the ears of (London-based DJ) Erol Alkan and he invited us up to London to play at Trash because of it."
Alkan later did a remix of Metronomy's single, "The Bay." The album title came from a car wrecker who lived in Joe Mount's hometown of Totnes that was owed money by a man called Pip Paine. The wrecker would leave wrecked cars around along with a note attached, saying "Pip Paine, Pay The £5000 You Owe."
