An important album with some very good moments but also some definite filler ("Religion I" is just Lydon reading the lyrics to "Religion II," "Attack" is a short Punk song that would've fit in fine with what the Sex Pistols were doing a couple of years earlier and "Religion II," speaking of, WAS written and submitted to the Pistols who rejected it; it's a good track, I think, but the fact it was left over from a couple years earlier lets you know that John Lydon didn't necessarily have a lot of material ready to issue a long player at this point in time. But Virgin wanted an LP, so he made it work. Fortunately for us, the opener "Theme," the title song (or should it be, uh, "band song" since it borrows most of the band's name?), "Low Life" and the vicious assault of "Annalisa" are all very good, and "Fodderstompf" is... interesting, we'll say, a nearly 8-minute track of fucked up dance music with some weird vocals. Would've been a lot better as an EP or just a 27-30 min LP like in the

60s (Byrds, Nashville Skyline, A Hard Day's Night, several Beach Boys and Kinks albums, etc), but there's no denying its pivotal role in the development of the various forms of the broad "genre" Post-Punk. But let's not get carried away and say it's better than Metal Box. It's not even in the same league.
