for obvious reasons, sometimes i am absorbed by the bass when listening to the this. however, i think many times it's Levene's guitar that's the weirdest part of this record, and the element that's bringing many of the strangely beatiful moments

Recently find myself listening to this a lot when shopping. it's a perfect enough to get to and fro. idk there's something surreal and funny about just trying to blend in the society(tm) while listening to social commentary about it. delivered in a mildly terrifying way at that. that, and driving grooves, imagine if I drove I'd listen to this in the car a lot (although idk still think radio 4 is out of place. given the title, maybe that's just part of the humor though. anglo ambiance amirite)

I was feeling it at first, but then it just started to get repetitive and boring. =/ Idk. I'm not seeing why it's so highly praised. It's not bad or anything, just lacking anything really exciting going on imo. It's has some moments, but yeah. I'm quite disappointed because it should be right up my alley and I went in with really high expectations.

Metal Box is weirdo background dub. I can't actively listen to this record for more than 10 minutes or so. But for background music it's both chill and interesting enough to keep you awake and focused!

As unbelievably amazing as Flowers of Romance is, Metal Box is PiL's best album and hands down one of the best albums of the previous century. Plus, these motherfuckers put effects on their hi-hats as standard practice and didn't even feel the need to stay in key or in a key. This is pure primitive genius at work. Took me long enough to get into it but wow.....

I like Flowers of Romance a bit more, but this is a brilliant record (or collection of records, technically). As others have said, the bass is just spectacular. The drumming is really good and sounds very fresh and alive, too. Then you've got the guitar playing these really sharp, angular sounding parts that just put it over the top. Oh, and of course Lydon's vocals are top notch. PiL was a great band.

Hmm... well, I think I'm going to take back what I said about preferring Flowers of Romance to it. I still stand by Flowers of Romance as an awesome record, but I think this one is PiL's magnum opus. Maybe the craziest thing to me about it is that just a couple of years prior, John Lydon was regarded as a snotty punk who was part of a band whose members didn't know how to play their instruments (which was a lie, of course; the Pistols could all play other than Sid), and here he's part of a group that made a very arty, experimental release fusing elements of Dub/Reggae, the German "Kosmische Musik" and a bit of Punk's influence into something new. Definitely one of the best examples of the vaguely defined "Post-Punk" genre. And what a cool item to have in your record collection if you can get your hands on the original film cannister style set. Can't recommend this one enough. Highlights a-plenty, but for me the best is "Poptones."

PiL began as a shambolic and skeletal framework of a band that was always destined to self-implode. Regardless of Lydon’s previous associations, the gesture he made by wanting to reinvent and not regurgitate what had come before was an admirable one. Beer driven jams, and a dual dose of cheeky laddishness and unpretentious experimentation resulted in a landmark ‘album’ in Metal Box (or Second Edition), nestled between two equally ambitious yet not quite so effective audio documents. Being exposed to such a shambolic, fragmented and unconventional framework of an album at such an early stage of listening to music had quite a profound effect on my outlook on music. I immediately wanted to learn drums, guitar and bass just to mimic the machine-like repetition and treble-laden guitar parts of Keith Levene. ‘Poptones’, and ‘Swan Lake’ were two songs that mesmerised me with both machine-like glorious repetition, and pure emotion respectively.

Buying this album earned me airtime on a local Welsh station (at least, I hope!). Plus, it's just epic.

This album is like a really decadent cake. When I sit down and start at it, I know I'm not going to be able to finish it all, it's too intense. I usually have to take a break at midpoint, then finish the rest when I'm ready.
