This album is truly exceptional, possibly the pinnacle of their career. It serves as a transitional masterpiece, bridging the funky sound of their early years with the mature, refined style of their later work. While the production quality is lacking, that is to be expected with Rick Rubin at the helm.

i commented a few years ago about it, but if you hate the mix/master on this album like i do, please do yourself a favor and listen to this fan remaster from about 10 years ago based off of the rough mixes, its not perfect but imo its FAR superior to the standard version, its genuinely the only mix i listen to of this album: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1roO6NRP09CZ121Ckgj5rAKLIEzPzHH9A

"Californication" holds the distinction of being the worst produced greatest album ever. You hear it one second in – the bass intro to "Around the World" is absolutely epic but the production does it as big of disservice it can... And that's hardly the worst Rubin has to offer on the record – the outro to "Parallel Universe", the breakdown in "Get on Top", the opening of "This Velvet Glove" are absolute lowlights here. That compression is so unbearably sterile... and loud. All the sound suffers but Chad's does in particular. I can't think of any record where the dichotomy between the quality of music and production is so huge. It's a shame of historical proportions because this is by far their greatest musical album. While on prior records they mastered the funk rock sound, and on "By the Way" they explored their softer side, here they're just rocking it out. It's still a wonder of a record but... could've been much bigger of...

awesome album, shitty production, but besides that this honestly sounds like they just picked up right from bssm but just more experimental

Discovered my love for this album in the ward despite only having bought the cd to loop the title track, say whatever you want about that.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I rarely come back to it because of the mixing. The choruses on Parallel Universe makes me turn it off 90% of the time.

That's the Rick Rubin effect. He's a great producer, but quite a few of his albums (this one, Death Magnetic and Slipknot's Vol. 3) have severe mixing issues.

Agreed. The songs are great, but Rick Rubin's production on this album is awful for sure.

Great album. Yes the mix is awful, get the unmastered bootleg, that will sound fine.

Over 20 years later and there is still no proper mix available of this album... Guess it's another 20 years of listening to the premaster

Its due to Rick Rubin compressing and distorting it to make it sound louder and less dynamic. For some reason, when albums sound like this, they tend to sell more.

Next year is the 20th anniversary (June 2019) ... If there's not a new mix (Let's face it Rick Rubin is part of the problem - even the 'unmastered' leaked mixes they used on the 2012 vinyl have clipping - ie. Get On Top) and master (Screw Vlado Meller) Warner Bros. would've really fucked up. For 20 years even people who aren't audiophiles have noticed how bad this sounds. Worse than any JF solo album recorded in his house. It's so hard to believe this is a professionally recorded album.

I'm not even an audiophile, and I can't help but notice that the production is utter shite. What a shame, because it could've been such a good album if it wasn't too loud

Really, really great album. Probably the best of their career. The transition album between the funky sound of their early years and the mature sound of their later years. Yes the production is awful, but that's Rick Rubin for you.
