Austere is an EP by the band Sparta. It was released in 2002 on DreamWorks Records. This was their first album, released just one year after tne break-up of their former band At the Drive-In. All of these songs were re-recorded for Sparta's debut album Wiretap Scars, however Vacant Skies only appeared on the UK version of the album, as a bonus track. It was recorded at Rosewood Studios in El Paso, Texas by Mike Major.

Sparta is an alternative rock band which formed in El Paso, Texas in 2001. The band originally consisted of Jim Ward (vocals), Paul Hinojos (guitar) and Tony Hajjar (drums), all former members of At the Drive-In. After a brief stint with Erick Sanger (Schatzi, theStart), the three of them recruited Matt Miller, an El Paso native and then-bassist of Belknap to become the band's permanent bassist.
