The importance of the Pretenders as a group, and this song in particular is severely under-recognized as one of the earliest female "rock" (not "pop" but ROCK!) LEAD singers in a band. Janis Joplin was there, but as a solo act, not a rock band. Chrissie Hynde was not only the lead singer, but the founder of the group, the song writer, and rhythm guitarist, and THIS SONG was, IIRC, their breakthrough hit. It was loved and was great back then, and is obviously loved and STILL great today. Gwen Stefani, Natalie Merchant, and many, MANY other female lead vocalists (I mean, the list is WAY too long to even get started) owe a debt to her that goes largely unpaid today, and that's sad.
