Egg punk typically is paired with softer, goofier, or weirder punk releases. While not typically seen as an official term, in recent years the term has been applied most to the 2010s new wave of punk in the Midwestern United States, though the term 'egg punk' is not exclusively used to only describe the Midwestern US punk scene. One of the earliest instances of the term 'egg punk' being used can be seen on the memelifecrew Instagram page in July 10th, 2018 where they posted an image made by user _xanaxl_rose_200 that was a diagram that placed various DIY bands on a spectrum between "chain punk" and "egg punk", since then memes and online punk communities helped spread the term and created an internet 'egg punk' scene.
