Just saw your comments in King Hannah's shoutboxes and then found your really great charts! I'm just discovering their music but I'm already charmed by them.

Y'all still using this site! Fascinating. Remember I introduced you to it 15+ years ago, looks like you owe me one! I remember you were a film student right? Do you recommend any films or TV shows with good music? I obviously know Morricone et al though.

Hah! Yes, but never got into the film business. Les Revenants has got a nice soundtrack by Mogwai. Darren Aronofsky's films usually have a good score, usually by Clint Mansell. Requiem for a Dream is good. The Fountain's score is actually much better than the film. As for old movies: I'm rather fond of Henry Mancini's score, for example the one for Touch of Evil. And how are you? Still making music? I actually recently saw Night Beats, I think you recommended them to me.

What are you doing these days then? I'm fine, what do you mean "making music"? I still do compilations/mixes and remix-mashup type stuff. Yeah I haven't really caught up with Night Beats since their first album but I think it was great. Cool you dig them. I think Mansell's vibe is a bit heavy for causual listening, but I'll look into those Aronofsky films. I definitely need to check more Mancini, I only heard one album.

No, it's not my band, but a very close friends of mine who I think are magnificent rock musicians/songwriters. The just released a new album. Check out their work on bandcamp: https://tandragonclan.bandcamp.com/ - These two (Cody and Austin) are pioneers in my opinion. Bringing the "old" 70s feel of rock, but they rearrange it so it becomes avantgard - but not weird.

Yeah, they are awesome. Their second LP is unfortunately not as good as their first, but still nice - I just found out about those finnish(?) band on your profile: Hedningarna. Sounds interesting!

Indeed, that one is not as special. The musicians in Hedningarna are Swedish, but they have collaborated with a few Finnish singers over the years. I used to be really into Scandinavian folk. Musically speaking these heathens (translation of their name) are certainly the most adventurous though.

did you know E-rotic once made an entire album full of Abba covers? classic. My only complaint is there's NO moaning on any of the tracks, not even on "Lay All Your Love on Me"

Well it's the best album I heard from this year so far anyway, maybe together with Deniz Kurtel but you don't really listen to house music so that's pretty much canceled out for ya.

btw night beats full length has shipped in the meantime and it's indeed album of the year material.

hehe, and I found the pains of being pure at heart to be rather boring ,but I've only heard one or two tracks. darklands is a much more focused and mature album than psychocandy while automatic is jamc's most consistent album. no idea why its reputation is that poor, maybe because the sound was somewhat different from previous works and people expected them to make an album that consisted of 40 minutes of "just like honey". the band was fed up with the public's fixation on Psychocandy and the first single from that album, that's why they called their 4th lp "honey's dead"...

great, on rym I recommended you Automatic earlier, Psychocandy is a special album but it's a bit over-anticipated compared to the others...

regarding more recent jazz, I could for example recommend Atomic, in general the Rune Grammofon label, and I think you'd really like the stuff from Nostalgia 77 Octet.

well new orleans is often called the birth place of jazz but I have so far focused mostly on jazz from the 50s and later (because I prefer proper albums to singles and compilations). this is a bit of a pity, because for example I love the dixieland sound where you have this wild simultaneous soloing of two, three or more players going on which was a concept sadly for some reason almost completely abandoned in the bop years. It's not an original suggestion, but for starting out with movements from certain periods and places the compilations from the soul jazz label can be a good introduction. One important (and sometimes neglected) Man from New Orleans who in a way fits into all the music styles you've mentioned is Allen Toussaint who didn't just record under his own name, but also performed on and produced/arranged records of many significant figures in the new orleans scene. I certainly intend to hear more from him and out of that area in general.

What is that? I'm not sure I've understand it... It's a new dEUS project or something? Not really like it...
