“M.V.P.” was released as the second single from Big L’s debut album "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous". Big L used Giovanni Salah’s “Summer Smooth Mix” for the music video but the album version was produced by Lord Finesse and used the piano break from DeBarge’s “Stay With Me.” The loop was famously later used by The Notorious B.I.G. on his “One More Chance / Stay With Me (Remix)” in 1995 and producer Lord Finesse believes Biggie got the idea to use the beat from Big L’s “M.V.P.” as he was opening for Biggie on tour:

"I know they heard that from , ‘cause that remix was no way done before “M.V.P.” was done. because I was there during the making of the Ready To Die album ‘cause I did “Suicidal Thoughts.” So, if I woulda heard they used it before L used it I woulda never used it."

He also revealed the following in an interview with HipHopDX:

"That song came about because L wanted a commercial, R&B loop that everybody could recognize. And me remembering that record, and also remembering how Kid Capri used it way back when he did – I forgot which record he did, but he had that , and I’m like, “Damn, well maybe we could reinvent that right there.”"
