''And every one of them words rang true and glowed like burning coal, pouring off of every page like it was written in my soul, from me to you.''

one day i'll come back to this song and i'll remember how i listened to it today in the coffee shop and overlooking the new orleans trees and thinking about montegut street and shades of red hair and watched you make me a bagel with lox. and i hope that day we are listening to it together.

Then she opened up a book of poems and handed it to me, written by an Italian poet from the thirteenth century. And every one of 'em words rang true and glowed like burnin' coal! Pourin' off of every page like it was written in my soul from me to you...Tangled up in blue.

This might be my favorite Dylan song. Love the alternate version on Real Live. This song should be in the Great American Songbook.

Recent changes: She lit a burner on the stove, then she swept away the dust. "You look like somebody that I used to know", she said. "Someone that I used to trust". Then she opened up a book of poems, and said to me, "Just so you'll know. Memorize these lines and remember these rhymes, when you're out there walkin' to and fro".

As a lot of people below take note of, Dylan is master of changing the lyrics on the fly. Like, he switches from 1st to 3rd person from performance to performance. And why not?? It's awesome. That's why the bootleg series is so bloody valuable.

Terrific account of the Minneapolis recording session in late 1974: http://njnnetwork.com/2015/01/the-magical-moment-bob-dylan-recorded-tangled-up-in-blue/
