This is the ninth song on Caroline’s debut solo album "Pang". This song appears to be an endearing, compassionate plea toward a particular person within Caroline’s life, potentially an aspect of herself, that tends to wear their heart on their sleeves, being easily moved and overtaken by their emotions to such a degree that they seem removed in their relationships and incapable of dealing with the demands of reality. Caroline pleads for this person to come back down to earth, yet in an empathetic/relational manner, calling for the other to fully express their emotional states of Anger and Sadness, represented by burning and swimming, in a way that promotes intimacy and closeness between her and this other.
She is compassionate toward the instability inherent in emotional expression, an equally beautiful and chaotic aspect of the human experience.
“You know the feeling of suddenly carrying someone else’s perspective around with you? Being alone but inhabited? Seeing everything through their eyes, and it’s a new world? The chorus of "Hey Big Eyes" is the voice of that new world 🐚
This one was one of the first songs written for Pang, summer 2017. @mattcopson had sent me “Surf’s Up” by the Beach Boys and I was listening to it in the shower, and when it ended, this hypnotic guitar line appeared in my head, twisting itself around these charmed 60s chords. I jumped right on my computer (wrapped in a towel) and suddenly it was 4am, I was freezing, and this song had poured out all in one spree, essentially done. 🐚 I’d beatboxed the ‘drums’ in through the mic and loved the feel of it, but wanted it to go harder… a few months later I played HBE for @agcook404, and he built the tougher breakbeat shell of drums it needed (with the original beatboxing still inside) 🐚”
