When he said "and I think it's gonna be a long, long time" until the song faded... I felt that

Pretty sure it's his best known song, and his nickname is The Rocket Man. Great tune 👍

Ain't that the best hangover song along with Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd? lol

I've always wondered why R.A. The Rugged Man never sampled this. I mean, "Ruggedmaaaaaaan", it's too obvious.

The inspiration for Bernie Taupin's lyrics, however, was the short story The Rocket Man, written by Ray Bradbury. The sci-fi author's tale is told from the perspective of a child, whose astronaut father has mixed feelings at leaving his family in order to do his job. It was published as part of the anthology The Illustrated Man in 1951. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2892

William Shatner's rendition is beautiful in its own way... it's also erratic, spastic, hilarious, heroic and timeless in its own way... like one of those really long farts in the shower that you remember for days afterward and laugh... but the thing is, after cap'n Kirk's version, you never hear The Bitch's original the same way

William Shatner can shampoo my arse. This is a brilliant song, always thought it was about Elton Johns descent (ascent?) into drugs and the subsequent distancing from his wife and family... maybe I read too much into it but have another listen, it SHOULD be about that, makes it a better track!

Simply magical. It was used to great (heart-breaking) effect on UK series Life on Mars. I can't listen to it now without remembering the show.
