Can definitely tell that Billy had a hand in writing this. Really reminds me of Adore/Machina.

What is this outro...? I'm having so powerful sensations listening to this part. I feel like I've heard it before, and that feeling is so fucking strong that I can't stop searching and searching who was the mysterious person that either took it from there and sampled it somewhere... Or actually created this melody before this song came out. Facts: it's not Madonna's "Frozen". Also, it's probably not NIN, though at first I felt like it might be. PLEASE, give me some lead. I don't know anything anymore, I just want to know this one thing, cause it's seriously haunting me. What my fucked up brain is trying to tell me?

Oh, great! So it wasn't not just me all this time 💗 Do you have any clues, suggestions? To be honest, anything might be helpful at this point, even if it's just a loose thought, a genre etc. Every time I hear this part I get the strangest "deja entendu" feeling, and I guess the whole song is already ruined for the rest of my life xD

I think it's a piece of modern neo-classical orchestral music, kind of film music or something. Actually, Craig Armstrong apparently left a mark on this song (check out Discogs info), and his work consists of various neo-classical-influenced downtempo and trip-hop stuff. Some compositions from him are pretty close in mood to Petals outro. But I have exactly the same "deja entendu" feeling, it must be something popular, not a lesser known one... Probably there is an extremely similar piece of music from movie or even advertisement which makes it so familiar, who knows

I replied to this a year ago maybe and it's gone. How odd. Anyway, I had suggested maybe the Rob D song 'Clubbed to Death' which appeared on the Matrix soundtrack, it had a similar orchestral bit through it. Either way that song, Frozen, and Petals all come out around 1998, give or take a few months, maybe the same studio musician, or just a trend at the time.

Oh, and I see that somehow I didn't get notification for this comment too? Weird, some error probably. And you're onto something - "Clubbed to Death" could be a piece of the puzzle for me, because when I was maybe ~13, The Matrix was my favourite movie (I'm dead serious, I loved it at first watch and it probably made a huge impact on my tastes later on). So, some years ago, I probably played this soundtrack countless times, and the beginning of the song (+ the piano solo somewhere in the middle) definitely have similar vibes. I'm still not 100% sure, but it's a great suggestion, so thank you! :)

@L57NT - Thank you for another suggestion! I just played "Wish I Could Fly", and I totally hear the similarities. But for me personally, it doesn't trigger this "deja entendu". So I'm leaning more towards your theory from before - that this is probably some piece of melody used somewhere years ago, and we just can't find which one exactly :')

yep, no notifications for me too... anyway, it seems that in my case the puzzle of "deja entendu" is solved - I listened to this Roxette song a lot back in the time, re-discovered "Wish I Could Fly" recently, and the sense of nostalgia strongly indicates the source must be here. But I'll comment once more if I find something else

GUYS, I have a lead xD I'm watching The X-Files (I saw some of it before, but never the whole thing). And in the first episode of season 5 ("Redux"), just after the intro, at about 05:00-05:15 minute mark, there's a piece of music that instantly made me think of "Petals" outro. So I checked, and it's SUPER CLOSE. Not the exact same to the note, but a very, very similar melody and feeling overall. I couldn't find the name of this piece yet (I don't know if it was even released outside of the series), but I'll keep looking. It's definitely written by Mark Snow though, like the whole soundtrack (a brilliant one I might add!). "Redux" was released in November 1997, so before "Celebrity Skin" (September 1998). It could be a coincidence, it could be an inspiration, I have no idea. What I do know for sure is that I DEFINITELY could have heard this soundtrack as a kid, because my parents were huge fans of the show when it first came out. I feel like it might be it, finally! 😊

The bridge of this song is one of the greatest things this band ever did. This is easily one of the best (if not best) song(s) on this album.
