To me this is more like a third MF album rather than a true KD album. It's got more of that traditional heavy metal sound and vibe of MF while later KD is more technical and slightly neo-classical. As someone who prefers MF to KD solo, this might just be my favorite KD album.

I love both bands, and imo "Them" is still his best solo record quite easily! But i do agree this sounds more like MF than KD's solo stuff, it's also the only album of his that doesn't have any kind of concept really. Can't go wrong with the King!

Oh well, i meant it's not a full concept album, unlike most of his stuff. The Spider's Lullabye is another one that's not a full concept, but still an awesome album too!

It says a lot about how great this band was that they only got better over the course of the next 3 albums. This is a really fantastic album and the true follow-up to Don't Break the Oath. Things would fall even more into place the next time out with Andy LaRocque taking over full lead guitar duties and getting in on the writing (he shares them with Michael Denner on this album, and Denner is the one with the co-writing credits), setting up a run of a few of the most awesome Heavy Metal records ever made. This one is just a step below, but still a brilliant LP; my favorite tracks are "The Jonah" and "Haunted."

I'll take a risk and say, that Fatal Portrait is the best LP of King Diamond. [4] I think that Abigail holds together better as an album. However Portrait just sounds evil with its rawer production and the songs are darker sounding. The album cover is the back patch of my denim cutoff :)
