Idiots-Rule
I remember discovering this, getting hooked to Chainsaw and the title-track. Next day I went to school and ecstatically played 'em to my Korn-worshipping friends. The EP (cover and music) made their stomachs turn. lmao

Recently watched through the Norwegian documentary “Helvete”, about the Norwegian black metal scene where Maniac reminisces about the release of Deathcrush in 1987, citing the review of Thor-Rune Haugen, journalist for the magazine Puls who said “Jeg er ikke sikker på om denne platta ska spilles på 33 eller 45, litt usikker på det. Men uansett vad jeg gør så høres det ut som om Kapten Krok fingerpuler Margaret Thatcher.” (transl. “I’m not sure if this record is supposed to played at 33 or 45 [rpm], a bit unsure about that. But no matter what I do it sounds as if Captain Hook is finger fucking Margaret Thatcher.” End of review.

Landmark recording that was massively influential to everybody in the underground in Norway. As Fenriz has pointed out several times, there was basically no Norwegian band making Extreme Metal at the time Deathcrush came out, so this made them heroes of sorts and firmly established them as the godfathers of the scene. For a long time this was my favorite Mayhem release and it may still be, but I have also embraced much of their other stuff, especially Live in Leipzig and of course De mysteriis dom Sathanas. But Deathcrush remains special... so raw, with Euronymous' signature guitar tone (speaking of influential) and over the top aggression. Plus some of the group's classic tracks (especially "Chainsaw Gutsfuck" and "Pure Fucking Armageddon").

I don't know why, but I've always seen this as a death metal record. Love this shit.

Perhaps, if you mean any early extreme metal by this. But I don't hear any real death metal here, death metal as it was defined by Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Cianide, etc. 'Deathcrush' is a very unique EP and kind of a thing on its own, but is much closer to early Bathory taken at its most extreme, than anything else, I think. So... still a form of early black metal than death metal in my books.

Deathcrush is not only an absolute classic, but the identity of both Norwegian and the second wave of black metal. it's also the pure evoked essence of the first wave Norweginized.

In my opinion Deathcrush is better than Mysteriis dom sathanas. I mean, lyrically Mysteriis is amazing but i've never liked Atillas vocals that much. Maniac's vocals is flawless though, i absolutely love his vocals. If Maniac were to sing on Mysteriis dom Sathanas that album would bee flawless 100/100 if you ask me. Although a lot of the lyrics on that album is very well written. I'd listen to Deathcrush over Mysteriis any day though, absolutely love this EP.

"the majority of folks saying it's Mayhem's best album are posers who weren't even alive when it was released". Kind of ironic you saying that considering everybody that likes this is probably older and knows the roots of Black Metal. Myself included. Most people that listen to their later material don't know shit about the roots of Black Metal and thus you get more people knowing of bands like Immortal over bands like Hellhammer and Sarcofago.

Lol "deathgrind"? This is pure Black Metal. The only true Black Metal from Norway. Then they went down hill and came up with some atmospheric garbage and everybody in the Norwegian scene followed. Completely changed the sound of Black Metal. This is more in the vein of Blasphemy, early Beherit, Sarcofago, Bathory, Hellhammer, early Sodom etc. "Bestial" if you wanna label it further.
