How did I never hear this album until almost 4 years after its release? (I already know the answer: the dreadful state of the rest of hip-hop...) But this album... It's really something else. Wow.

This album would've been amazing if they'd gone for it a little more. I know The Roots is fundamentally a hip-hop group but sometimes you wish they'd do a little more melodically...

I actually thought a lot of these choruses were pretty good, particularly I liked the ones on "Sleep", "Lighthouse", and "The Otherside". For the most part they all served their purpose well in the overall concepts of the songs and album as a whole (though I admit lately, some of The Roots choruses can sound a little underwhelming). The one I don't care for really was "Kool On", that one kind of comes off as generic and somewhat corny... I can see where betrazivis is coming from though, this album, instrumentally, can sound kind of basic at points. ?uestlove lays down a drum beat then a piano and/or keyboard come in and build around it, in a very simplistic manner a lot of times (or vice versa). The only songs on the album which don't seem to share this same type of composition are "Kool On" and "Stomp", which include more noticeable guitar riffs. Nonetheless, The Roots' improv and occasional symphonic backing totally make up for this in my opinion, much less the strong rapping.

I agree with the guy below. These songs are fantastic aside from the horrible choruses. They should rerelease without that annoying person on it. The only exception to this is Make My

Cool raps, but too cheesy melodies. This has not a whiff of the deepness of "things fall apart".

A year later, this is still one of my favorite albums... and why are there Roots & Beatles comparisons?

Wow they actually put out two awesome albums in a row. That's something they haven't done in a while!

stunning album. favourite tracks after a few listens are "i remember", "the otherside", "make my" and the instrumentals at the end are beautiful. The use of electric piano and strings on the record reminds me a little bit of another amazing concept album, which is "the empyrean" by john frusciante.
