all the fans of their '94-97 era (and mid '90s Norwegian metal in general) should give a listen to Vidvandre demo. they were of the same Stavanger-school doom-deathy kind of gothic metal, but Vidvandre is way more pastoral, folk-tingled and is rawer than early ToT. the vocals are pretty deranged and there is a distinctive norse flavour, which was not typical for that scene, and the general mood, for the lack of a better word, is kinda wretched. by the way, it's the first band of Frank Claussen, but has nothing in common with his work in ToT. https://youtu.be/Vjo6hRqF-r0

Что период готметала, что электронный, оба интересны, но после ухода Кристин последние два альбома какие-то вторичные и натяжные.

the guys were in their early 20s when they wrote velvet darkness they fear. nowadays guys in their 20s write the same boring metal nightwish stuff. i can’t stand anymore. the 90s four bands that include ToT, The Gathering, The 3rd and the Mortal and Tristania will never be bet, which is actually pretty disappointing. i wish they could get together again, so we could appreciate new things from their majestic musical minds. from the first album to the last: they were never the same. they could do beautiful goth/doom metal, they could do industrial and they could do the dark metal stuff with the last two albums, this is a thing we can’t see these days.

They never did industrial. It was pop starting from Aegis. After NIN and mallcore invasion people have distorted understanding of what industrial is. Industrial do not have a structure. Every ToT song has one. In the second part of 90s a new sound emerged, developed by people from industrial dance scene. It is the only connection. Thinking every good band can produce good music if they renunite is a waste of mental force. Waiting for it to happen is disrespecting their reasoning leading them to quit. If man has something to say he is saying it, if he does not stop talking, he is embarrassing himself. There is no logical and historical evidance they could do what you describe. Also Ethelwynn has right. Metal is dead in new generation.

Their "reasoning leading them to quit" basically boils down to having one of the worst fanbases in metal history. And honestly, all those "bRiNg BaCk LiV", "ThEy ChAnGeD, nOw ThEy SuCk", "ThAt'S nOt MeTaL aNyMoRe", "MeTaL iS dEaD", "ThAt'S nOt *insert aforementioned genre*", whiny, overgrown children deserve zero respect, so I see nothing wrong in wishing the band made a comeback.

i would love if they returned. they accompanied me through my adolescence. i listened to them in my best moments and in my worst too. they are so fucking special with e without Liv, and I think they were such a precious thing that Norway will never have something alike. I really love them, and now that I have money (I'm not an adolescent anymore), i cannot see them live, which breaks my heart entirely.

Well, their last album wasn't as good as their previous work and yes, they are getting generic. Well, '90s will never return and it is hard to create new and original music in today's "streaming' world. BUT, there are plenty of good avantgarde black out there is you appreciate the genre.

Almost twenty years ago I heard "A rose for the dead" for the first time - that is, since before Lastfm existed. I casually remembered the band right now, I don't know why. Just as I have no idea how I liked it when I was fifteen hahahahaha

Dodheimsgard switched from generic, boring bm (I love bm, but good bm, not an average one) to strange mix of bm and industrial, which is unique and much better, than their earlier works (especially 666 International holds the torch). Additionally, Covenant changed their name to The Kovenant due to name rights issue with Swedish band with the same name, not due to switching from sympho bm to electro/industrial garbage. Refers to Ethelwynn's comment 27 May 2020, 4:40pm.

Dødheimsgard's debut album wasn't THAT generic and boring, at least because of Aldrahn's "angry drunken viking" vocals and melodic bass lines, and their second album is not pure bm, it's black/thrash. "Satanic Art" EP is an interesting interpretation of early Thorns, but with kinda "industrialised" production (the music is great, but I would like to hear it with more "traditional" sound). I also mostly don't like cliché b/w approach to black metal because of all early black metal scenes and bands had a huge differences from each other (all early Norwegian bands had their own unique sound), and I understand your opinion about their first works (Zweizz from Fleurety would've agree with you), but I find something special in early Dødheimsgard. at least "Kronet til Konge" was a decent and passionate interpretation of their favourite music, and definitely not soulless norsecore garbage

But I do understand them. All the four phases of the band (as far as I count them) are really different from each other. Only their last phase kept some similarity, which was the huge urban theme in the lyrics

The last phase was only two albums lol Of course it would sound similar. Liv’s phase will always be the best, in doom or industrial, the best albums are with her, that wasn’t only the female vocalist but also one of the found members.

I imagine that many of the hardcore fans must hated it back then as well. I love the album but it’s clearly a huge change in their sound. Nor everybody understands or accpets. Many bands do the same and are criticized. As I didn’t hear ToT in their active years I see how it’s important for any band to change and find another ways to express their music. They made several masterpieces, each will please different kinds of fans.

I'll never get over about how despite all their sound changes, even changing vocalists, they still somehow made it sound like Theatre of Tragedy. I personally prefer their industrial/future pop phase, although I really love all the albums. Not only they helped define gothic metal, but also explored and showed many goth subgenres to its metal fanbase. I believe they chose the right moment to call its quit, both albums with Nell were amazing and left us wanting for more.

Aegis and VDTF both are the best of their stuff. Just great! But I totally don't understand Assembly. Maybe, this is great album for someone, but for me it's just nonsense and total disappointment. Btw, I like industrial music, but not this! Thanks, there are tons of another great gothic and doom bands to listen to)

What I really like about Assembly and Musique is the context. Almost every relevant band which developed the metal thing in gothic music in the earlier 90's suddenly went berzek and released synthpop, industrial or heavily eletronica-influenced records around the same time (the exception was Type O), like Paradise Lost, Moonspell, ToT, Tiamat and even Fields of the Nephelim and My Dying Bride. I think people are influenced by the criticism which Assembly and Musique had; they are wonderful albums, like every other Tot album in their own way.

I'm a bit late to jump on this train and even though I love Aegis dearly and see it as perfection, it's Assembly and Musique that usually bring me back to ToT. It's all a matter of taste.
