I adore this album. It's incredibly expressive and yes, the off-kilter lyrics and production choices are a big reason why this album works. It literally keeps you on your toes as a listener while still feeling grounded in pop dynamics. This is a singular project for people who appreciate iconoclast artists. Kremlin Dusk is the standout track imo.

a lot of the criticism is valid (clumsy lyrics, plastic-y GarageBand sound) but it's still a solid record imo. i think if the mix were improved it would be a lot better. the lyrics aren't all that great and are a little clunky, but they're heartfelt, and that really shows through. i really like Exodus 04, Hotel Lobby, and Kremlin Dusk.

I've always enjoyed Exodus for its unusual and daring songwriting, but one of my gripes is the wonky track order, so I've made a Spotify playlist with a smoother flow (imo). Here it is in case others want to hear it. I'm open to feedback and thoughts :) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3BNzr0SsMpPzSFsAWvw9O4?si=c34c19e5539f490a

I don't really think there is not such thing as a bad utada album but the lyrics on this one are some of her worst

Listening to this for the first time in probably ~15 years; even more disappointing than I remember.

amazing album. the production is so stellar, I really hope she does something like this again. [4]

The only song that I think truly exemplifies masterpiece potential is Kremlin Dusk, that song is transcendent. The rest seems to have the issue of the arrangements/melodies being too tight and not having any breathing room, along with some pretty dinky production. There needed to be a lot more refinement for this to be a masterpiece, but Exodus is still an album that is way ahead of its time.

I agree with you on Kremlin Dusk. You know, I think the album's production is where most of the criticism towards EXODUS is aimed. I've read that Hikaru produced a lot of the album using a computer program on her laptop.

Kremlin Dusk is excellent; too bad about the rest of the album. There's some decent stuff, but most of the lyrics are shockingly bad.

I remember loving KD the most. Check BRILLANTE I think it's in the same vein in terms of epicness (ayumi hamasaki song)

I cannot deal with the people claiming the production on this sucks. It's the second best part after Hikki's voice! It still sounds so fresh even after 8 years. Exodus is so ahead of the curve it's untrue.

This album is such a grower. Deep and unusual lyrics and some major earworm. Yeah, the plastic-y production is pretty bad, but once you move past that you realise the whole album is quite an achievement. And the UTADA UNITED 2006 versions of Kremlin Dusk, YMMWTBAM and Devil Inside are perfection and made me love this album even more.

Seriously. Such awful production, especially compared to the perfection that is Ultra Blue—or Deep River, which was even released two years prior. It kind of works for a cute song like Easy Breezy, but it ruins the serious tracks.

@Q306005: You and your wife are just typical Americans then. TITO sucks ass compared to this album.

I should punch myself in the face multiple times for not appreciating this album back then. I only really liked Exodus 04 and Devil Inside but the rest is pretty amazing.

I love Utada Hikaru, she is a great singer and the instrumentals are so beautiful ! I could not live without her music. Hotel Lobby, Final Distance (especially the Remix), First love, Simple and clean, Colours and much more !

why even compare the two albums? they're extremely different. this is experimental and TITO she was going for a mainstream sound. i love them both.

Arguing against this being worse than TITO is stupid, this one sounds special to me for some reason. Maybe its cause me and my wife fucked to it when we first met

Man, this is so much better than TiTO. Several of these tracks actually came close to being of the same standard as her Japanese releases... Kremlin Dusk comes to mind.

v Actually the lyrics are only bad in some songs (here's lookin' at you, Easy Breezy). Kremlin Dusk, YMMWTBAM and Hotel Lobby all have really good lyrics, though you're gonna have to pay attention to understand them. Her English lyrics have always been odd though.

OK, I mixed it up, now I know the single's cover is my favourite but none of both here discussed... Well, I like both exodus album covers somehow.
