The first part of the bookending epic “The Beach” announces Wolf Alice’s ambition to the deliver something new and profound.
This Macbeth-quoting dynamic-bending song speaks of the late-20s anxiety of keeping friendships above ego. “Fun” fact or slightly-related sidenote: a study from the University of Finland and the University of Oxford shows human friendships start to deteriorate at the 25-years mark.
The second part “The Beach II” explores the same themes but under a more optimistic lens.
In the band’s interview with RadioX, Ellie said:
“Beginning and ending the album with the theme of nature, that was especially a nice way to end it. Both those songs are exploring similar themes of friendship and nature. It felt like you’d been on a journey, starting with one that was anxious and a bit tense, and then end with the same thing, but positive and uplifting. Your journey is complete.”
