Funk mandelão was born in the late 2010s in the state of São Paulo, named after the Baile do Mandela party, where the genre first came to form. It's characterized by catchy, repetitive, and simple lyrics, raw, moody, and minimalistic production, and distinct drops with bursting bass. It's also referred to as "funk paulista" (funk from São Paulo) but differs from Funk ostentação as its influences come from Electronic Dance Music rather than Pop Rap, akin to the rave-oriented mega funk subgenre famous in the South of Brazil. It reached national popularity in 2020, as "Oh Juliana" by Niack became a viral hit, topping the charts and ending up as one of the most successful songs in the country that year.
