bloated as hell but I'm Deranged is a MAJOR career highlight. Outside, Small Plot, We Prick You and Architects Eyes are all great as well.

This album was never well received, either by fans or record companies. It is Eno and Bowie high on drugs, and it is very hard tripping. Certainly one of my favorite all time albums!

P.S. I kind of blame Brian Eno for this release. At the time, he was also muddying up Laurie Anderson with the Bright Red project. It was as though the discussion was, "just be as vague as you can! Someone will apply meaning somewhere for you!". But yes. Strangers When We Meet is still one of his best. Probably because it wasn't even written for the album.

It's always bewildering to read fan reactions to this album, which is astonishingly awful as a whole. The concept is non-existent and impossible to translate into the songs (except for extremely vague and casual references to things like the Minotaur, Baby Grace and Ramona), and the majority of the songs are just completely void of character. Sure, the prospect of Bowie doing an industrial album is extremely exciting, but the reality is much more disappointing, apart from the exhilirating Hallo Spaceboy, The Heart's Filthy Lesson, the title track, and Strangers When We Meet. If the rest of the album was up to the standard of these songs, as opposed to what feels like an endless reworking of the same theme, it would have not only more immediate appeal, but lasting appeal as well. 1. Outside will never have the permanence his earlier work does. And have you READ the liner notes? What a piece of bullshit. P.S. And yes, the PSB remix of Spaceboy is shit. The others aren't bad.

David Bowie should really make an album continuing the story, as was planned... Anyway, this is an awesome album. One of his best.

this is just creepy. Any David Bowie fan would be totally bewildered by this. It's old David Bowie making Goth Techno!

One of those albums I don't listen to much, but when I do, I think it's GREAT, and I wonder why I don't listen to it more often. XD

I think the late Scott Walker was the inspiration rather than NIN. And thankfully I don't own the version with the PSB-remix.

A wonderful mix of adventurous experiments and joyful pop songs. IMO his most satisfying, if not even best album. And if had come out in the 70s, critics would even agree to this. But as it stands it came out after Scary Monsters and is therefore deemed as useless. Ah, sigh.

A David Lynch movie based off the fictional characters David Bowie created in this album would be interesting. But as it stands, I'm Deranged was great for Lynch's movie Lost Highway.

Before I got this album, I had heard Hearts, & that awful PSB remix of Hallo Spaceboy. A friend of mine said he though this to be the best Bowie album. First I didn't like most of the songs that much, the lyrics & melodies made a weird noisy mush, but I was intrigued & kept listening. Later it all started to make sense, and I love this album now. Not an easy one to get into, that's for sure.
