Laugh Track is phenomenal. This album sounds just like their old records, and I couldn't ask more of these guys - guitars are so much brighter than on FTPOF, and Bryan's striking drum parts are finally brought back. Turn Off The House, Deep End and Tour Manager are easily some of my favorite songs from The National whole repertoire. And Smoke Detector sounds like it's a B-side track from Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, which is an amazing surprise for all the old fans. Now, guys, this is really a win.

From what it’s worth, “Laugh Track’ feels like a return to form. Doesn’t make F2POF a bad album, but there’s a feel to this band that I can’t explain that goes beyond the “musicianship” or skill and it was missing on F2POF. In all fairness, it started to go away a bit on I Am Easy To Find. This feels like an easy follow-up to Sleep Well Beast, while still incorporating lessons and things from the last two albums. For me, The National doesn’t get below a 6.5/10 on any record because their standards are so high. But I’m glad that Laugh Track has the potential to be another memorable classic because that’s how good this band is!

I think we need to view Laugh Track and Frankenstein as one double album (the shared album art convinces me this was the intent). With that in mind, I don't think it makes sense to pick apart or praise one of the records without the context of the other.

It doesn't make F2PoF a bad album - F2PoF already was a bad album. ;) Actually, to my ears, Laugh Track is the first thing partly worth listening to since SWB. I stilly agree, though, that F2PoF has some fair songwriting on it. The production is just rediculously bad; taking away any sort of soul from the music and making it plain wannabe radio pop. There still is some bad production (and songwriting, consider Weird Goodbyes, Hornet and Coat On A Hook just that, both!) on Laugh Track, but also some really fair stuff, worth spending a while listening to it, and Smoke Detector being sort of surprisingly good, wanting to tell us something apart from "ya, well, difficult, sorry for myself"... And of course, their still a good live band. Just a pity they play Zenith in Munich, not worth it. Elsewhere I'd go watch them.

Laugh Track > Frankenstein by a landslide. I’m not sure if these songs just needed a bit longer to bake or if there’s a whole separate reason that they were rolled out months later… but I suppose it doesn’t matter. If someone insisted that this was their best release since TWFM or SWB, I wouldn’t really be able to argue. It’s really good to have them back.

Fair enough, I don’t think anyone said it was. But even so, that speaks volumes about FTPOF.

To each their own but I can’t remember even half of FTPOF whereas Space Invader, Smoke Detector, Hornets, and Turn Off the House have been popping in my head routinely for the last couple of months. (I will say FTPOF does have a stronger opener though.)

I'm really getting Sleep Well Beast vibes from these two new tracks. And just in time for autumn!

I really miss the old days of driving drums, clever metaphors, and really interesting music. The new album is the definition of "okay." Everything feels so dumbed down with the newer songs. Gotta sell out those arenas I guess.
