Description

Alpha-ville Festival 2011 is coming back to London for its 3rd edition with an event filled with day and night activities. Expect 4 days of live music, art, film, talks, group meet-ups, labs and parties.

On the evening of Saturday 24th September, Alpha-ville presents:

MATTHEW DEAR (Ghostly International)

Dear has released a huge number of tracks on renowned labels such as M_NUS, Ghostly International and Spectral Sound over the last decade, defining the minimal-house genre. Playing in some of the largest festivals and nightclubs around the globe, Dear’s sets and productions continually push the envelope, taking a leading role in defining modern minimal techno/ tech house.
Depending on who you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist or a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound and has been commissioned to remix The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service and The Chemical Brothers. He’s released mixes for the Fabric and Get Physical’s Body Language and maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none — and he’s just hitting his stride.

JENNIFER CARDINI (Kompakt, Crosstownrebels)

Cardini’s productions have also been successfully on target, right from her first acid house 12-inch on Pumpking Records in 1996, all the way through her latest EP on Crosstown Rebels. These carefully crafted tracks have been slowly released over the years, but they have landed solidly on techno powerhouse labels like Mobilee and Kill the DJ. Most recently, Cardini has been spending more time continuing her production efforts, focusing on her current solo projects. She is also starting her own label, Correspondant, as an outlet for her musical vision.

ANSTAM (50Weapons/Modeselektion)

From 2007 - 2009, ANSTAM released the concept-trilogy 'AETO' | 'BROM' | 'CREE'. Limited black vinyl 12", distributed by Berlin HARD WAX, played and supported by artists like Scuba, Modeselektor, Surgeon, Scorn and the Autechre DJ Rob Hall.
ANSTAM also proved their live qualities when playing two performances as the support act for the first Moderat shows in Germany.
Now in 2011, ANSTAM have released BALDWIN, on Modeselektor‘s label 50Weapons and have been touring with Modeselektor on the Modeselektion showcase that was recently at Melt Festival.

KANGDING RAY (Live AV)

Kangding Ray, better known as David Letellier, has returned in 2011 with his third album for Raster Noton, pushing further his explorations on the edge of digital and analog sounds. With ‘OR’, Kangding Ray continues to blur the borders between experimental and bass music, and brings his signature sound to another level, somewhere at the darkest fringe of club culture.
OR (« gold » in french), as the only chemical element that seems to keep its value for eternity, refers to the cult of endless consumption and the absurdity of fluctuating currency valuations, while in english, as a logical operator or grammatical conjunction, OR represents the possibility of another choice, an « inclusive disjunction » which suggests that there might be another answer, a different path to follow.

His live performances are known for being intense moments of musical experimentations, while he samples voices, and mix layers of different instruments, including analog machines, laptops, midi pads and guitar. Expect a full immersive experience in the first London show presenting OR.

EMPTYSET (LIVE AV)

You should all know Emptyset, the very special Bristol based duo formed by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. The project investigates the sonic potential of experimental bass driven music, reflecting upon the legacy of dub, techno and sound system culture whilst integrating aspects of feedback, minimalism and spatial recording. Their collective agenda has been exploring electronic music’s diverse influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed design. Following their self titled debut longplayer released in 2009, they have worked on a collaborative release with Underground Resistance vocalist Cornelius Harris (remixed by Chris Liebing and Ben Klock) and have just released their follow up album Demiurge – that is one of Alpha-ville's directors favourites of 2011. They recently debuted their live AV show at Mutek 2011 alongside Mika Vainio as part of the Industrial Evolution’s showcase.

Their live show at Alpha-ville will be a special collaboration with designers Clayton Welham and Sam Williams and will fuse Emptyset’s forensic sound with live video feedback, processing and tape erosion. We are super excited about this show, it will be a London Premiere, a not to miss!
