GOODGOD DANCETERIA! - EGYPTIAN LOVER, NICKY DA B, PRINCE ZIMBOO, NO ZU, GEOFFREY O'CONNOR, DONNY BENÉT, STRAIGHT ARROWS, LEVINS, YO GRITO DJs, GOODGOD SOUND UNLIMITED (USA, JAMAICA, AUS)
2 JUN | 9:30PM
Goodgod Small Club brings its tropic-themed walls and provocative flavours to Vivid LIVE with cult heroes from 80's hip hop, New Orleans bounce to Jamaican dancehall and Australian garage. A basement venue in the heart of Chinatown, Goodgod's chaotic swing between front bar bands, back room DJs and vice versa will be in full flow with their takeover of the Studio and Western Foyers. Veering between the controversial, bizarre and entertaining in equal measure, nostalgic Hip Hop renegade Egyptian Lover leads the Diplo-approved Nicky Da B and Jamaica's Prince Zimboo in a cross cultural celebration of booty shaking moves and music.
A beloved character on the initial LA hip hop scene, Egyptian Lover's over-the-top gimmickry and early hits have garnered a renewed appreciation, leading audiences to re-examine his influence through some of rap's earliest albums. A likely predecessor to a mirage of contemporary dance personalities, such as second generation bounce rapper Nicky Da B, who has brought dancehall's infectious call and response tradition to what the Guardian has described as 'a panic attack set to music'. Recently featured on Diplo's toasting 'Express Yourself' single, the prominent producer/tastemaker also introduced mysterious Jamaican mc Prince Zimboo through his globetrotting Major Lazer project. Preaching the virtues of clean living yet boasting his ventures in polygamy, Prince Zimboo's sly exuberance and exotic humour is a refreshing break from hip hop clichés.
Bringing their beloved disco ball and genre-bending DJs in tow, Goodgod's extended family of garage favourites have come to define the new Australian underground, featuring Melbourne collagists Geoffrey O'Connor and No Zu, self described 'disco accordion/jazz bassist' Donny Benét and Sydney's own lo-fi darlings Straight Arrows. Acting as a bridge between tongue-in-cheek decadence and niche movements both old and new, Goodgod's Studio and Western Foyers will undergo the Danceteria! treatment...
