Description

Curated by Adam Wiltzie (A Winged Victory For The Sullen)

SILENCE IS SEXY …

… draws the curtains. No Tragedy. The story has been told. New sounds glisten on the horizon. We are proud to have given, since ’11, extra attention to contemporary classical composers who candidly flirt with electronica. In retrospect, the list is quite impressive: Ludovico Einaudi, Ryuichi Sakamoto w/ Alva Noto, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hauschka, Dustin O’ Halloran, Nils Frahm, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Lubomyr Melnyk, Greg Haines, Christina Vantzou,… Leading labels like Erased Tapes (with a real expo), Denovali Records and 130701 (Fat Cat) were a point of focus too.

SILENCE IS SEXY – GOING OUT W/ A BANG!

CURATED BY ADAM WILTZIE (A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN)

We'll be ending in style and beauty, of course. With a contrary bang too (or did you think that Ben Frost would ever sticks to the rules?). None less than Adam Wiltzie (A Winged Victory For The Sullen) proposed being guest curator. A gesture we were more than happy to act upon. The result: a mini-festival that got out of hand.

ON THE PROGRAMME…

A Winged Victory For The Sullen couldn't be missing as bandleader, of course, and Australian Icelander Ben Frost will symbolically (read: literally) see to it that Silence Is Sexy ends with a bang. Dutch lute player Jozef Van Wissem and Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir will play several intimate sets in the AB Club, throughout the festival. http://vimeo.com/67426859
We are also proud to present the Belgian stage debut of The Group, the collaborative project of Efterklang frontman Casper Clausen and Greg Haines. http://vimeo.com/84682041
We're also looking forward to the unique collaboration between Robert Hampson (Loop) and video artist Christina Vantzou. French Brussels-resident Sylvain Chauveau does his thing with a ten-member orchestra and Belgium's Illuminine had the honour of recording their deubt last year in the studios of Sigur Rós.

A unique project to conclude with: at the request of AB, the brand new Echo Collective –the string ensemble behind AWVFTS – will rewrite Burzum’s concept album ‘Dauði Baldr’ from ’97. You know, the dark ambient album that the Norwegian black metal artiest Varg Vikerness wrote during his 15 year incarceration.

Work by Margarita Maximova will also be continually screened. This young video artist from Brussels was recently selected for ‘Coming People 2014’ and won the biennial prize awarded by the Friends of SMAK.

You can also expect a number of Q&A’s in Huis 23 with the artists who appear.
