MODERN RITUAL – Live at Café Oto – 17th March 2017. FINANCIAL TIMES Weekend Review
“ What exactly had we just witnessed? A concert? A happening? An old-school variety show? Even by Café Oto’s left-field standards, it was an unusual evening. It opened with the writer Luke Turner taking to the east London venue’s stage to reminisce about cruising for sex in Epping Forest as a way of escaping depression; it ended, some 90 minutes later, with the musician Charles Hayward overturning preconceptions about percussion with a half-hour snare drum roll. …. Groping for definitions was fun. But if rituals of sex, foghorns, arcane folk music and the physics of the snare drum threatened to tip the evening towards information overload, clear themes also emerged. Cannell’s improvisations make you take notice because they are rooted in Renaissance, Baroque and folk traditions rather than jazz or 1960s-style experimentation. “
