Description

More than 50 years after he recorded the world’s first solo jazz saxophone album, the landmark For Alto (1971), Anthony Braxton will perform solo in Los Angeles on October 6, 2023. He is writing brand new material for alto saxophone that he will debut at this concert.

Braxton is a visionary in the world of contemporary music, renowned for his groundbreaking work in avant-garde jazz, free improvisation, and experimental music. His numerous commendations have included being named a MacArthur fellow and NEA Jazz Master. His prodigious recordings, performances and writings have proven him to be a composer, performer, philosopher, and educator with few peers.

Since the late 1960’s Braxton has made an indelible mark on the music world; his development of a multi-hierarchic and trans-idiomatic practice has both embraced tradition while also moving into radical new territories. From his early work, including as a key member of the AACM to his later Arista albums, his "Forces in Motion" Quartet, Ghost Trance Music, Trillium Opera Complex and beyond, Braxton has tirelessly sought to investigate and push the boundaries of music and human perception with a rapturous enthusiasm that has inspired generations of artists and listeners.

Braxton’s solo Los Angeles performance, his first in over 40 years, will be a rare opportunity to witness his unmatched musicianship and unparalleled creativity in its most direct, unvarnished form. Armed with his signature alto saxophone, Braxton can be expected to deliver a dynamic performance marked by emotional intensity and technical virtuosity. Defying categorization with blistering solos and delicate melodies, his music spans a vast sonic landscape, drawing from an unparalleled, extensive repertoire of original compositions and improvisations. Performing within the sonorous space of the First Congregational Church, Braxton’s performance promises to be a rare immersive musical spectacle, a must-see event for anyone with a passion for cutting-edge music.
