To jellobomb: I went because it was free, and i like gang gang dance, who unfortunately i ended up leaving... The only reason i mentioned animal collective was to put my musical preferences somewhere in the review, so you would know i was not just a coldplay fan not digging stuff thats kinda far out there... Any yea i get that they are math rock, i like Hella alot, but again, neither group did anything for me. Plus i never even said i dont like the groups, i actually own battles last album and think its ok.

GustavoxCore, if people under 18 around you not dancing ruins the music, you never liked the music in the first place. Hahaha

I'm with BertEngle on this 100%. I wish Battles had never written Atlas. It doesn't even stand up to their other material. Hopefully they decide to play a paid 18+ show next time so I can properly enjoy the fucking performance without having to deal with a bunch of shitheads.

i don't really get why you would go if you didn't like any of the bands. battles aren't like animal collective...animal collective is like new weird america. and battles is math rock. even black dice is way more mathy than AC. experimental doesn't really describe anything. you could be experimental folk and (rightfully) not sound anything like experimental electronic.

I've got to admit that I'm not the biggest Battles fan but I totally enjoyed their show. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Black Dice... I don't understand that type of "music", and how people were dancing so enthusiastically to something that doesn't really seem to have any consistent rhythm, perhaps I'm just missing something.

All their music is danceable, it's just that barely anyone was even moving to it. I tried to get a mosh going for some other songs too, but I guess everyone had a headache from Black Dice or it was just too fuckin hot out.

Right on BertEngle. It was a free show, you had no commitment to it people! Atlas is a stellar song, but all of their music is danceable. Also, I posted some pictures to flickr if anyone's interested (none of the crowd, sorry mtoci, aburninggiraffe, and anyone else looking)

I started getting very bored during Battles, it sounded like rodeo rock to me the whole time. I saw a review highlighting the repetitiveness of Gang Gang Dance and Battles in the New York Times, but to me, the constant syncopation of Battles was primarily led with a House music beat that just kept flowing down the same path. Most of the rhythm to their tracks sounded like "On the Run" by Pink Floyd, especially during the encore. I'd say Gang Gang Dance has been stronger and Black Dice took a little while to hit their stride, but I wish one of them got to headline and have an encore, Battles put me and a few other groups of people who were dancing earlier to sleep after making us nod our heads for about 10 minutes. I looked up frequently and noticed the majority of the crowd was nodding to that same House music beat the whole time.

The wild guy was right next to me and my friends, and I'm pretty sure he had a few beers..He was cool though, real into it which is rad.

Yeah, he went for pretty much the entire set. Me and my friends were debating whether or not he was doing that to be funny or if he was on something... I think he was serious.

In my opinion, Gang Gang Dance was okay. They'd be a better band without their guitarist and vocalist. Black Dice nearly destroyed my ears, they were really bad. Maybe I'm missing the point or something, but I can't even really call that music. It was just ear splitting noise. There was this one dude all the way up front that I felt like punching though. He had these weird jerky awkward dance moves. Battles' set was AMAZING. That drummer is something else, seriously. I'm surprised he didn't pass out! And does anyone remember the guy on E? He kept trying to grind on this friend of mine. I was the dude with the Radiohead shirt that was fucking with the guy on E. I swear we got at least 6 minutes of this guy on video, it was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen.

OH, man! I can't believe I forgot about this show. I love The Battles and Black Dice. What a bummer! How was the show?!?!

I am concerned for anyone that actually enjoyed and/or took Black Dice's set seriously. I would easily place them on the bottom 5 of bands I have seen in my life, but I am not convinced they deserve to be called a "band" or even "music", so I'll hold out for now.

Such an ace show. And to the guy who's ears were almost destroyed...I saw them at Johnny Brenda's with Thank You from Baltimore...I mean they had some really cool parts but talk about destroying one's ears! I think everyone was ace but Ty's mic was reallyyy low which is lame. Harold, was that you with the Freebird request? and everyone hear the Ddiamondd request? Yaknow just doin' my part hahah

During the middle of Gang Gang's set, some dude to the left of me just sat down and started doodling in his sketchbook, lol. I think it was a steam train riding out of a snake with a thoughtbubble of a city or some shit, dude must have been in outer space
