Influential Korean singer Jo Yong-pil, often called 가왕 (King of Singers)
An ordinary boy with no memories of singing before a crowd, he was so moved by Ray Charles's voice as a child one day that he became interested in pop music. He later saw a Ventures performance and was compelled to learn how to play the guitar. His father, educator and founder of a middle school, thoroughly opposed the idea of his becoming an entertainer, but his determination only grew all the more for his father's opposition, and he dove into music the moment he graduated from high school.
