“Hope” is the second single from (Sandy) Alex G’s album House of Sugar, released September 13 on Domino Records. Lyrically, the song recalls Alex’s experiences with the drug Fentanyl among his friends - specifically, one particular friend who overdosed.
From Alex’s interview with The Fader:
“‘Someone I lived with OD’d,’ he says. ‘And then I noticed people I knew kept…’ he trails off, thinking. ‘I don’t know, man. The thing is, I don’t want that story to be the story of the album. It’s just one of the songs. I don’t want that to have any more weight than other songs. I don’t want it to be like, Here’s this tragic story; buy my album. After I wrote it, I sent it to my friends, who were, like, even closer to this guy. Just to be like, Yo, if you want me to trash the song, I’ll trash it. But they were down. Still, even now, I’m sure people are gonna be like, Fuck him for writing about this. But that story could easily be fiction.’”
