Biography

33EMYBW is the solo project of -based musician Wu Shanmin, a.k.a. 33 (pronounced "San San"). Since she started making music in 2002 she has been in various Indie bands in her home town, such as Muscle Snog (2006 - 2009), 33 Island (Chinese: 33岛), and Boojii (Chinese: 波激小丝). But the most well-known band she has been in is Duck Fight Goose (Chinese: 鸭打鹅; formed 2009), in which she plays bass guitar. In 2016 Duck Fight Goose transformed their sound from indie rock to futuristic club music with their second album "Club Zvkvnft", and Wu Shanmin has pursued that direction further still as 33EMYBW.

33EMYBW is a magic complex that combines electronic music, visual images and fashion. Her works reflect surreal aesthetics and elements of avant-garde art. Wu Shanmin uses the term "arthropod dance” to describe her sound, a lot of which is created using smartphone apps: "The arthropod’s body is segmented and bilaterally symmetrical, and some body segments are merged into special parts to produce corresponding functions. The structure and mechanical beauty of this creature turns out to be connected to my music. I currently use this concept in my live set, using pure rhythm and arthropod-like beat evolution to achieve the perception of tiny creatures, dancing around…"

Her first solo track, "EMSYGYDL" released under the name 33, was on Svbkvlt's 2015 compilation "Downpour". Her subsequent releases have all been as 33EMYBW: her 2017 debut EP "Medusa" on Beijing's DForce Records, her self-released debut album "Golem" (2018) and her second album "Arthropods" (2019), the latter featuring remixes by Ikonika, Lechuga Zafiro and Don Zilla. Her 2019 EP "Dong 2" combines electronic and styles with recorded sounds from the culture of the Dong people (Chinese: 侗族; a.k.a. Kam), an ethnic minority group from southern China.

As well as regularly playing throughout China, she has performed at CTM Festival and Sinotronics Festival in Germany, China Drifting Festival in Switzerland, Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda and SXSW. Besides producing music, she is a creative director for the Shanghai fashion brand Zuczug by day.
