If Walls Could Talk

“If Walls Could Talk” discusses the secrecy and intimacy of a relationship that is best kept private. This song is comparable to other 5SOS songs such as “English Love Affair” and “Greenlight” which also have suggestive lyrics.

“If Walls Could Talk” hints toward the romantic occurrences in the bedroom; the walls between rooms are the only thing to conceal the true events of a shared night, as well as witness them.

From their Cocktail Chats (Episode 4):

Michael: It’s probably the song that took the longest to get finished. It went through this whole process where it sat in this demo phase for about 6 months. I love the melody in it, and obviously I’m a massive fan of Julia Michaels, and I can definitely hear her influence on the song. It’s kind of living having these retro sounds but also in a completely new, different era.

Calum: We wrote it with Julia Michaels, Forever (Tranter Version), Sir Nolan and the wonderful Ashton Irwin. I think this song is particularly cool because in the scale, the last chord of the chorus is an A Major, when it should be a A Minor, which opens up different variations of notes which you can put over that chord. Which is really cool, which is why the chorus is so unique.

Ashton: This song was inspired after the bassline of The Talking Heads' “Psycho Killer”.

Luke: My favorite part about this song is, like Michael talked about, the retro feel, the melody’s beautiful, the lyrics are great. I didn’t have much to do with the writing of this song, but I like to think I had some sort of influence on the end, the guitars and the overall vibe. My favorite part is The Clash kind of guitars. I love this song, it’s gonna be great live. And I think this song influenced other songs like “Meet You There”.

In a tweet, drummer Ashton Irwin, said that this track was one of his favorites off the album.
