the latest material under the Abdulla Rashim moniker is from October 2016. more recently he has released music under his own name, the next album Emerald Fluorescents will be out in a couple of days btw. i'm looking forward to it, i wonder if he will be abandoning this moniker for good though.

At least this is being discussed here, whereas in souncloud it's only the culture of celebration.... hopefully with the new marketing strategy, focusing on his real name, he will leave behind such unfortunate misappropriation.

I partially agree with the DeathBoy. Northern Electronics has a very misplaced attitude and the scattered references to politics and 'revolution' are a sad and confusing consequence of the popularisation of techno music. A bit like when Levi's started to see ripped off jeans, after Joe Strummer appeared wearing one in a concert. Abdullah is a privileged kid that has also the privilege to be able to name himself an arabic name and get hyped about it, whereas the label co-ran by him grown in elitism and a certain blasé attitude so typical of post internet. The music is not bad at all, however, just pure pretentiousness and complete unawareness of the world around us. But then again, the latter is nothing but a characteristic of contemporary electronic music.

all of the buzz and intrigue of an underrepresented perspective in an overwhelmingly homogenous space with none of the actual struggle. love the records though.

Well, no, that's not what I think. @gregor, by struggle I mean the difficulty that minority artists encounter when trying to break into spaces like techno. Linell is fully aware he's trafficking in orientalism with the name - see his shout below. I don't see him as appropriating anyone's culture or making light of anything and in fact, it's actually the lack of culture or any discernable political substance in the work that I take issue with.

abdullarashim's comment in his own shoutbox is the best thing I've seen on last.fm so far. [2]

"super sinister looking middle-eastern businessman" -- "handsome swede". I can't help but find it amusing that this strapping young Swede would confuse his projection of 'mystery' with titles and concepts so distinctly Arabic so as to elicit novelty in techno. Western audiences consume orientalism--it simply happens to be more 'sublimed' for the non-mainstreamers and progressivists and among them.

So this guy isn't actually a super sinister looking middle eastern businessman? What a let down. [3]
