Amorphis are known to thematize finnish mythology - the Kalevala to be exact - in their songs, as well as the characters who appear in it. While "The Beginning of Times" told the tales of Väinämöinen, the main character in the Kalevala and Tolkien's inspiration for the character of Gandalf, and "Silent Waters" focused on Lemminkäinen, this album tells the stories of Ilmarinen (yes, that's also my username). He's a master craftsman with godlike abilities, forged the sampo (track 1), some kind of mill that ceaselessly produces grain, salt and gold, thus providing for a whole nation's wealth to prove he's fit to marry the daughter of Louhi, the ruler of the northern lands. Later she gets killed by wild animals summoned by Kullervo (track 9 - Course of Fate). Because of the loneliness he felt afterwards, Ilmarinen forged another bride (as a surrogate) made of silver and gold (track 2 - Silver Bride), but since she has "no heart, no warmth, no life" he tosses her back to the furnace

Also Ilmarinen forged the dome over the whole place, hence the name "Skyforger". I should probably read a translated version of the Kalevala.

Beautiful Album. Perfect melodies, incredible voice and singing, progressive structures, and the orchestral additions? Simply amazing.

Most songs on this album are boring. It's only slightly more exciting than my least favourite Amorphis album ''Far From The Sun. But still good compared to alot of bands. [2]

Can't compare this to the older albums. I liked it at first but then it became boring.

Skyforger is likely to be remembered as the highlight of Tomi Joutsen era Amorphis. I know I will remember it as such. [2]

This sounds ten time better than any of Paradise Lost's albums. Stop comparing Amorphis with Opeth and Paradise Lost...

I think it's melodic/progressive metal with some folk metal addition. Beautiful album, very catchy, by every next listen every single song becomes even more interesting. Especially 'From The Heaven of my Heart' and 'Sky is Mine'. btw, sorry for my bad English...

in my opinion, Melodic/Progressive Metal. One of the best albums ever, anyways.
