“true story” details lies from outside perspectives about Grande’s life.
Over a R&B infused pop instrumental, Grande talks about playing the part of the villain, and saying she’ll “be good in it too”. Throughout 2023, there were numerous rumors and gossip about Grande’s relationships and her personal life. From divorce gossip, to new relationship gossip, and body gossip. A few demos of the track leaked on June 30, 2023. Grande expressed her emotions on the leaks, saying; oh this is so disheartening. i was going to come back to this hook to use eventually. i don't know how people are still doing this but please stop.
While talking to Zach Sang, in the first part of their interview, she explains that she “took notes” on the songs that were leaked which she was planning to revisit, and said “they’re completely different now”. The track also ties into the following track on the tracklist, “the boy is mine”, and Grande said to Zane Lowe and Apple Music, “It’s an untrue story, based on all untrue events. It sets up “the boy is mine” obviously. It’s kind of like, “Okay, I’ll play the bad girl. Now here’s your bad girl anthem.” That’s why they’re in that order on the tracklist.”
