Biography

    2007 – present (17 years)

  • Founded In

    Dublin, County Dublin, Leinster, Ireland

Autumn Owls formed and began preparing ideas in 2007. The three-piece from Dublin converted a shed into a recording space and began writing and recording.
The band self-released their debut EP “Insomnia Lodge” in May 2008 to very favourable reviews. The follow-up was released in December 2008, another five track EP titled On the Trail of the Disappearing. The new tracks were recorded at Westland Studios with producer Ciaran Bradshaw. On the Trail marked a bigger and more adventurous sound from the band. The EP was greeted with a wave of critical acclaim from Irish, UK and US reviewers. “A Thousand Blind Windows,” the first single taken from the EP still enjoys steady airplay from 2FM, Today FM, Phantom FM, BBC (UK) and CLC (Spain).

After the release of On the Trail the band took an opportunity to hone their live performance, supporting many UK and US acts such as Micah P Hinson, Real Estate, Early Day Miners and DeVotchKa, as well as playing their own headlining shows. They also recorded numerous live sessions for Irish Radio and TV. 2010 saw the band tour in Italy, Norway, the UK, Canada and the U.S., taking part in festivals such as SXSW and CMJ in the States as well as Canada’s NXNE and CMW.

Autumn Owls recorded their debut full-length album Between Buildings, Toward The Sea in April 2012 with Brian Deck (Califone, Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine) in Chicago. While in Chicago they recorded an Epitonic saki Session for Webby Award-winning music site, Epitonic.com. The band had premiered an early demo of their new song “Spider” for Epitonic’s 2011 relaunch mix tape, so they had an existing relationship with the site and it’s founder Justin Sinkovich. When Justin decided to launch Epitonic’s label arm in July 2012, the timing worked out perfectly to make Autumn Owls their first signing. Epitonic will release album on Oct 16 in Europe and Oct 23 in the US.

REVIEWS OF INSOMNIA LODGE EP:

" Autumn Owls debut EP Insomnia Lodge is a work of accomplished song-craft, the melodies carefully measured but intoxicating in even the smallest of doses"
-AU Magazine

" A lovely blend of acoustic folky based sounds, rootsy americana and a bit of the post rock epic sounds of radiohead. Its a lovely meeting of old and new sounds where rootsy folk meets post rock"
-Road Records

" A brooding, rich sound of acoustic guitars, subtle keyboard and husky vocals make for some haunting listening. autumn owls are utterly absorbing, 7/10"
-Channel 4 Planet Sound

" At their core they're acoustic based americana tunes and come with all the accoutrements attached to that label; harmonicas, the sound of plectrums being dragged along guitar strings, and whatnot but what really makes them work is how they're wrapped up in droney synths, melodicas and ambient guitar noise"
-Thrill Pier

" These four young Dubliners have enormous potential. Some of it is a bit like Nick Drake’s older brother singing for an experimental Wilco. Other parts are unique. It’s subtle and interesting, and despite the complicated song structures they don’t get too self-indulgent . A Fantastic debut, 4/5"
