Biography

Birthed from a longstanding friendship that began while studying music at NYU, Awning is a wildly refreshing contrast to all that is stale in electronic music. It comes as no surprise that Jon Sheldrick and Luke Smith, the duo behind the outfit, are both classically trained musicians. Folk songs written years ago by the pair in a dingy Brooklyn apartment are still present in Awning's repertoire today, if only shells of their former selves. Influenced by acts like The Books, Stephen Wilkinson’s Bibio and Will Wiesenfeld’s Baths, Awning brings electronic music to a sophisticated level by simply scaling it back.

The core of their songs, when stripped of their computerized textures, is often just acoustic guitars and vocals, melodic lines that travel fluidly and with purpose. Structured from seeds of ideas—a simple riff or chord progression—the two will often record a stand-alone folk song before they take to harvesting samples, slicing, rearranging and transforming it into its realized self.

If it’s the swaying, sometimes distant vocals that reel you in, then it’s the ebb and flow of a driving beat that keeps you there, referencing the bygone era of Simon & Garfunkel, while embracing the marvels of modern, constructed noise. Both acknowledging and rejecting their musical upbringings, Awning’s intuitive and thoughtful harmonies lay atop an informed modern aesthetic, built upon a profound understanding of classical musicianship and an unyielding desire to mess it all up.
