“SUGAR” features vocal performances from four of the six vocal members of the group. The song also features a vocal contribution from American alternative singer Ryan Beatty.
On the track, the members discuss topics such as hollow youthful relationships filled with drug use, as well as being there for their partner and wanting them by their side.
The track was leaked prior to GINGER’s release, turning up on file sharing sites starting on June 21st, 2019, leading many fans to believe that this would be a single for the record. However, the leak most likely resulted in the song’s release being pushed back to along with the album.
On March 3rd, 2020 BROCKHAMPTON released a remix featuring Dua Lipa and Jon B after the song’s success on the Billboard charts.
The group later performed the track live on The Ellen Degeneres Show on September 6th, 2019, and on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon the following month.
During the week ending January 18, 2020, “SUGAR” entered the Hot 100 at #70, marking the group’s first song to place on the chart. During the next week, the song peaked at #66.
“SUGAR” was certified platinum on April 29, 2020.
