Very good record but in my view it's their least essential LP (not counting Go Away White). Where The Sky's Gone Out and Burning from the Inside broaden the band's horizons and explore new territory, Mask just kind of refines what they did on the debut. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, I just don't think it quite lives up to the other stuff they did.

In the time since I made that comment, I've come to view this one as their best record. And I think it does push boundaries and expand their sound a bit more than I gave it credit for initially; there's a definite Dub influence on display here, and it's also more of a Post-Punk record, with interesting, scratchy, scraping guitar lines and rubbery, groovy, almost danceable bass parts and steady, propulsive drumming. An excellent record that underscores why Bauhaus was such a great group -- one of the best of the entire Post-Punk scene, IMO.

It's so clear where [artist]She wants revenge[/artist] got their sound from, especially in songs nearer the end of the album, The Man With X-ray Eyes, Mask, Muscle in Plastic
