"Silver Soul" speaks of the power of romantic connection and love. The "silver soul" mentioned in the song is likely a metaphor for the intense, almost spiritual connection that two people can feel when they're in love. The refrain of "it's happening again" evokes a feeling of cyclical, continuous love that can never really be broken. The imagery of the spinning wheel and sand references the fragility and impermanence of these feelings, yet simultaneously the power and potential for rebirth that love can bring. Ultimately, the song suggests that love, no matter the circumstances, is always worth the risk.

(12/3/09): “Silver Soul is like deep, dirty passion, the most pre-sexual feelings. It’s a song that I personally very much- I still have intense feelings about it. It’s kind of a monster.” ~ Victoria, WOW
(1/15/10): “I think ‘Silver Soul’ is a very sexual song; a dark, intense, and moving song.” ~ Victoria, About.com
(2/4/10): “‘Silver Soul’ is about a dark sexual being, and is described as a metaphysical thing, but it also links to the imaginative world and experiences.” ~ Victoria, Thumped
(3/4/10): “We were working on the song ‘Silver Soul’ and it was really late one night and she said ‘You know what? This group of songs is Teen Dream.’ And we’d been talking about different weird titles, but it immediately resonated with us, because that song is kind of a sex anthem or something. It’s a super intense passionate song, and we were working on it in the heat of the summer…. We also realized something crazy that we’d never thought about. You know the scene {in season two of Twin Peaks} where the giant is on stage, and he’s just saying, very slowly, ‘It is happening again’? That’s the lyric that just came to her for ‘Silver Soul.’ She’s always been obsessed with David Lynch; I like David Lynch, but not as much as she does.” ~ Alex, cokemachineglow
(3/30/10): “A song of dark forces and habitual patterns, and in that sense, it touches on the limits of something that can be sexual and something that is brooding.” ~ Victoria, Impose
(4/16/10): Why did you decide to make the video for ‘Silver Soul,’ of all the songs on Teen Dream? Was there something that you needed to convey that you felt you hadn’t when writing the song? “I get really intense visions when I write songs and when I believe in something, my imagination goes crazy. But I had never made a video before and the only reason I did was because when writing this song, I had this narrative in my head instantly. I saw this girl, I saw the hula hoops, I saw the silver, I saw the shower and the leg; it was one after another and I was just like, ‘What am I going to do? I have all these things in my brain?’ So I talked about it with Alex and he supported the idea of me making the video, even though I had no experience. And I felt compelled to do it because the vision was so strong. Also, I’m continuing to challenge myself— I think the artist always needs something harder or different to do in order to stay alive. So that’s why I decided to do it— so I could over stimulate myself even more.” It’s such an intimate video. “Yeah, you like the butt?” (laughs) Well, I was curious about how the girl felt about those shots! “Well, I knew when we were filming it. I told her, ‘Ok, I think your butt looks really amazing. Would you be mad at me, if when I’m editing it, that I use some shots of your butt, like, really close?’ and she was like, ‘no, no problem.’ So I did ask permission to do that!” ~ Victoria, Aquarium Drunkard
