Biography

Better Daze partners Andrew Jervis and Paul Scriver first met up when Scriver, saxophonist and leader of soul jazz band Neomythic, came on to Jervis' Friday night radio show on college station KUSF. Discovering that they both had an interest in mixing samples and live instrumentation, they decided to try to work together.

"I wanted to make something that incorporated all of the new things that were going on but in a jazzy, musical way so that there's depth to it and it's not just a breakbeat and a loop. We were definitely interested in keeping some live stuff in there that had some kind of improvisation or spontaneity," explains Jervis.

In the studio, Jervis and Scriver took inspiration from the deep vibes of musicians like Pharoah Sanders, DJ Shadow, Courntey Pine, Portishead, and Goldie. "Andrew brings in records to listen to for inspiration … very often we'll take small pieces of them, layer a lot, and then start stripping away the layers," says Scriver. "It's kinda like painting with a spatula, like later Kandinsky work, where he was layering and layering and then he would just scrape away layers and get an incandescent quality."
