Here's a scholarship essay I wrote that briefly mentions billy woods (follow the link for another link that will lead you to my essay): https://www.last.fm/user/VikIsThicc/shoutbox/106474469:shoutbox:47d70761-f536-4b46-9f26-f73dea3a5589

I be feeling like I'm listening to an entirely different artist than yall. Every time Billy Woods drops everyone hails it as the greatest masterpiece of all time. The beats tend to be sleepy and then Billy just... rambles over them? With the same kind of cynical lyricism in every single track. The metaphors are poetic but they always land in the same kind of territory. He's always like, "Life is a lemonade stand, but the lemons are moldy and nobody's buying" "Life is a pretty girl but she's not answering my DMs" lol it's like that one Aesop Rock track over and over. Idk I try to get into it but this just isn't the pinnacle of rap to me like it is to yall lmao

Yeah, i guess its all about reference point you are coming from. What do you want from rap? This is all I want from rap.

That's completely fair, and now that you say it like that, the enthusiasm makes sense. But do I think this is any way better than Cole, Kendrick or Griselda no I do not. It feels like publications are quick to ignore other prominent rap records to praise Woods. Like I've seen Woods and Armand Hammer on plenty of lists. Killer Mike dropped an amazing project this year and it's on no lists. I also feel like Larry June had a highly favored project among general rap fans and it's again on no lists. So that's where EYE am coming from. Every time Woods drops it feels like his praise drowns out everything else and I got a huge bone to pick with that lmao. Especially since I don't know a single person in real life that even checks for son like that.

I get your point, and it took me a while to get into Billy Woods. Weirdly enough, Church did it for me. Just listen to Magdalene for example, and I'm sure you'lll be impressed with the writing on that second verse. I'll take that over the best Cole song any day.

I'm glad he's getting recognition now, but don't sleep on his mid-2010s albums. Dour Candy, Today I Wrote Nothing and Known Unknowns are all very deserving of the same acclaim Church and Maps have gotten!

Lowercase billy woods please, last.fm. It's uncomfortable for me to see his name with conventional capitalization.

After 10 albums + a few more from Armand Hammer, woods actually deviated from his typical sound and style! Maps is fantastic !
