The song, which is called 'El Mayor' in Spanish, is Silvio Rodriguez' signature song. Upon visiting his arranger, Frank Hernandez, in Havana, he said: "Björn, you have taken Cuba's most important song into the future. You have added something to that which was already perfect."
Björn Afzelius shed light on his political point of view in the liner notes to the song on the 1998 Definitivt compilation:
"Ever since 1961 Cuba has remained under an economical blockade by the United States. This is an act of crime that violates public international law, and has rightfully been condemned by the U.N. In vain, of course."
