“Evangeline” is a prayer of sorts. It’s one of the songs I wrote when I was secretly songwriting during the time I was studying opera. I went to one of the opera practice rooms, sat at the piano, and the song came out in probably under half an hour. There’s nothing specific, no detailed story, to it except for the fact that I was in a down place and trying to reach out to something. It’s what I was feeling inside which I think is part of the reason it resonates so well with people."
"With the diverse musical backgrounds our band has, we can look at a song and can see it in many different ways – what I like to call the coats of a song. We’d been playing “Evangeline” for so long and had many different versions of it, but we didn’t have the one we were super satisfied with. We always felt like we were grasping at something, but hadn’t gotten the magic one. When we went to record it, it wasn’t necessarily our intention to make a different version, but I feel like the way it came out was the most honest, best coat for the song to wear. Honestly, we never intended to release it as a single, but we knew that it was the version we wanted forever. It couldn’t have turned out any better than the way it did. The song got a new life, which is awesome."
