and I think he really has a solid understanding of what Dylan's all about and what his music should sound like. Bob obviously feels or at least at one point felt differently since he started self-producing his records after this. And it's hard to argue with the results he got either, as, for example, "Love and Theft" is one of the best sounding albums of the past 30 years or so.

I think this is a good album but I don't think it's quite the masterpiece some make it out to be. Nor do I buy into the whole "epic comeback" line of thinking about the record. He hadn't been in some consistently terrible 20 year rut; several of the albums he made from 1978 to 1997 were good, a few were very good, a few were mostly forgettable but had strong moments and a few were atrocities. This one is, as I said, good or even very good but it's also really fucking long and the songwriting and lyrics are hardly on par with, say, Blood on the Tracks. Most of this stuff is just your average 12-Bar Blues with lyrical content typical of such songs, but he sounds like he has some real conviction throughout and Daniel Lanois has done a tremendous job producing the album. I don't understand critics' (or Bob's) gripes about the production at all, as frankly it transforms what is mostly average level material into something terrific. He also did a wonderful job on Oh Mercy several years prior

He channelled some great Chess Records influences and came up sounding a lot like Howlin' Wolf. I love this record. If it's been made in the sixties, people would've gone completely nuts over this one. That's peak Dylan. What a run he's having since Time Out Of Mind.

perfect for late night walks, lonely and wondering what the fuck should you do now. "It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there" heh... as painful as Blood on the Tracks.

You two are spot-on. It's 4:47AM, I've been up all night, I'm drinking a beer and this music sounds like molten gold.

I remember buying this album when it was released, not particularly impressed at first, thinking "it's alright", then it grew on me and became one of my favorites by Dylan... it really is kind of unique and special, there's so much depth to the atmosphere, the songs, the way he tries to deal with death, his voice, everything about it really.. to me it's Bob's last "true" classic album (for now)[2]

Good album to drink some beers to. Too bad his follow-up efforts haven't seemed to match it.

I love Lanois' production on this album. So great to listen to around sunset in the summer with a cold drink in hand. Just takes you away...

Among these are a number of the probably most beautiful sad songs ever written and performed. If this doesn't make you cry - what can? Truly cathartic in the Aristotelian sense.
