In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine declared "Like a Rolling Stone" the greatest song of all time.
Spearheading Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited (1965), Like A Rolling Stone tells a surrealistic fairytale of a girl falling from high society. Notable not only because of the new rock sound, but also because of its length (clocking in at just over 6 minutes, it was an extremely long track for the time), it became Dylan's biggest hit up till then, reaching #2 in the UK Pop Singles Charts.

It quickly became a live favourite, most memorably perhaps as a closer for most of Dylan's 1966 World Tour (documented briliantly in The Bootleg Series, Volume 4: Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" ). Over the years it has been played many times and a version of the song can be found on most of Bob Dylan's other live albums.

In 2005, music critic Greil Marcus wrote an entire book on the recording of Like A Rolling Stone, called Like A Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan at the Crossroads .
